Rhinestones have an exquisite sparkle and brilliance that can be used to adorn jewelry, clothing and accessories. Even the simplest items can be transformed into glamour using them.
Austria and the Czech Republic are world renowned for producing the finest rhinestons. These are actually crafted from leaded glass crystal, not the acrylic you find in many craft stores. The difference can be seen in the sparkle and long life of the genuine stones. Even after decades, a real crystal rhinestone will not lose its brilliance and shine. Rhinestone jewelry made in the 1930’s and 1940’s has survived today and still looks gorgeous.
In 1775 George Fredrich Strass discovered a way to coat the clear stones from the Rhine River wit ha foil backing. The result was a shockingly sparkling stone akin to a natural diamond. Eventually glass crystals began to be used instead of river stones. In 1892, rhinestones became mainstream when Daniel Swarovski won the patent to the machine he invented which automatically cut the stones. This made it possible to make more stones in less time and at far less cost. Swarovski remains the largest maker of rhinestones to this day.
You can find rhinestones in an amazing range of colors and styles. The use of crystals in formal wear, wedding gowns and other exquisite pieces is unmistakable. The flat-backed stones made by Swarovski can be attached easily to fabric using different methods.
When buying your rhinestones, be sure your seller is trustworthy. Be sure they are selling authentic Swarovski or Czech crystals as opposed to the plastic rhinestones which become cloudy and lose their sparkle very quickly. Remember: If you’re getting a deal that is too good to be true, it probably is.
Most companies making rhinestones also make crystal beads. Swarovski has an enormous line of beads in all shapes, sizes and colors. These have in turn been made into handmade jewelry or other accessories. Crafters all over the world have come to rely on these beads for their very best projects.
When it comes to using rhinestones, your only limit is your imagination. Enjoy working with this medium to create lavish, luxurious clothing and accessories which are sure to stop the show.
Other than the Flat Back Swarovski Rhinestones, you can also look at Hot Fix Crystals
