Christmas is an occasion rich in history and tradition. People all over the world might celebrate this season in many ways but one thing is for sure, everybody is experiencing the best times of their life in Christmas. Many people spend it with their family and friends, enjoying each other’s companionship, reminiscing warm memories, and making fresh ones.
They claim that objects, good or bad, go in threes. Christmas has a lot of unique customs but the three that are obvious are Christmas trees, fruit cakes and Christmas cards.
Each family has its own secret recipe in preparing fruit cakes that is closely guarded and passed down from generation to generation. All over the world, fruit cakes have many varieties as the diversity in the ingredients included become apparent. In the United Kingdom, for one, fruit cakes are moist in texture and richer in flavor than their US counterpart. Fruit cakes are also a part of the British Christmas tradition, usually covered with royal icing and marzipan. They’re then embellished with holly leaves, real or artificial berries, and other ornaments signifying Christmas.
Well, what’s Christmas if there’s no tree teeming with bright lights and ornaments? It is also a special Christmas tradition wherein the dads and their young lads get out and select the tree and the entire household adorns it, with the unique privilege given to the youngest member of the household to place the star on top of the tree. By tradition, the tree is set up and decorated on Christmas Eve, December 24th and will be removed the day following twelfth night, January 6th. Coniferous trees and evergreens are the widely used trees and the firs, spruces and pines being the three most known species.
On the other hand, gifts and personalized Christmas cards are a way of life. Hence, Christmas wouldn’t be complete without receiving and giving away a Christmas souvenir in one way or another. People spend a lot of their time thinking about what to send their relatives on this special occasion. It is also evident to everybody that Christmas is the busiest shopping time of the year where people are more ready to splurge in the spirit of Christmas and of giving. Business Christmas cards are sent out by massive corporations to let their clients realize how much the company is grateful for their support and look forward to a healthier relationship in the future.
These are merely three of the Christmas customs that, whether we admit it or not, we all look forward to each year. After the Christmas season, after cleaning up the clutter in the kitchen, after taking down the tree, we’re so thrilled for the next Christmas holiday.
